I have been very busy on the second draft of Ice and Fyre over the last few weeks. It's slow going, but hopefully, I'm still on track for a spring release.

As this book marks the completion of the Trilogy I will also be releasing a boxed set and I thought you may like a sneak peek at the artwork - so here it is - Enjoy!  Oh, and don't forget to enter my competition to receive a free signed copy of The Last Girl Guide - only 7 days left to enter.

Esmeralda Burg: Confessions of a Hippy Dropout (Episode 1 - Off The Grid)

I am convinced my parents were both wasted when they decided to name me, their only child, Esmeralda. Esmeralda Burg literally means Emerald City. Of course, they assured me my name stemmed from their love of my 'beautiful green eyes', but really? Going through my formative years being referred to by my 'friends' at school as 'the little witch' (apparently Esmeralda is a witches name) is not for the faint-hearted. Still, I have always identified with that horse from the Wizard of Oz - you know the one; it changed it's colour every few minutes, like an equine Katy Perry. Though I don't change my hair colour with anywhere near the regularity of those two examples, I do have the habit of changing my mind rather too often.

I am an all or nothing type of person I suppose - try it all but accomplish nothing. Two years ago I bought a potter's wheel and kiln (I made three pots, only one of which was symmetrical and none that held water). I joined a yoga class but gave up when I caught sight of myself doing 'the cat' in the full-length mirror - the pose should have been called the pot bellied pig. I tried intermittent fasting, however, it grew to be rather more intermittent than I intended. Last year I left my job in fashion editing to join a television advertising agency, I embraced Hygge, Low Carb Dieting, Veganism (two idealisms that were hardly compatible) and I took up the guitar. This year's obsessions are the Paleo lifestyle, foraging food for free, and minimalistic living.

My husband regularly accused me of not sticking to, or finishing anything, referring to each of my latest life-changing projects as an 'Esme Fad'. He had a point, of course, but there was no need to reinforce it with such predictable regularity or with that awful expression of disdain, which is why, ironically, our marriage was ultimately destined to become just another 'Esme Fad".

So that brings us to today. The day I left the world as I know it behind me. Today I left my job, my apartment in the city, my credit cards, my phone and my husband. I packed my old rucksack with a sleeping bag, a couple of pairs of jeans, t-shirts an old sweater, my journal and a book on foraging and off the grid living, and I went off the grid.

Last month I sold my car and jewellery, added the money to the rest of my savings and bought a derelict cottage with its own small plot of arable land and two acres of woodland close to the Norfolk Cost. It fitted all of the criteria from the library book I had 'borrowed' - Foraging and Off the Grid Living for New Age Hippies. The plot is south facing, with its own water sources (a fast-running brook and an old well) and there is plenty of wood for fuel.

This morning I took the train from London to Norwich, a bus to the village of Gigglesditch and travelled the last three miles on foot, but as I sit here now on the floor of my new home, I am wondering if I have gone completely batty. My 'cottage,' constructed from wood, is little more than a log cabin if I am being honest. There are holes both in the roof and door, which is swinging on one hinge. The only indoor 'facilities' are a small rusty cast-iron woodburning stove and an old square sink with a pump (cold water only from the well). The floor is littered with leaves, twigs and animal droppings and there is no other furniture. The table, chairs, and sofabed I ordered won't be arriving until tomorrow. A door at the rear of the cabin opens into a large larder cupboard with a meat safe. Outside is a rickety outhouse containing a waterless toilet, which is basically a compost box with a hole in the top.

I tell myself that this is what I wanted, to get away from it all, ditch the rat race, live my life like a human should, a free range human living in harmony with nature, getting up with the dawn and going to bed at dusk. No endless cycles of nine to five, no boss to make me feel incompetent, no husband making me feel unworthy, just me, living my life in the moment, the way life was meant to be.

I went outside and gathered together a few branches binding them to a long straight stick with one of my hair bands, then I swept the floor of the cabin. The sun had dipped behind the trees and the light began to fade so I gathered some wood and lit the stove and then I unrolled my sleeping bag and ate my first meal in my new home - Paleo friendly, gluten free egg salad sandwiches washed down with a bottle of peach tea.

10 Golden Rules for Writing an Amazon Bestseller

img_1444

So, I now have two Amazon Bestsellers... from nowhere to here in just over two years. I've been thinking about how I did it and have come up with these ten top tips for writing a successful book as I realise there are a lot of you out there thinking 'I wish I could do that' - well you can!

Just follow this ten step recipe and you have every chance of joining me or maybe doing even better.
  1. Build an author platform (website, blog and social media) with a newsletter sign up to build your fan base.
  2. Write a killer book!
  3. Get a great cover that is appropriate for the genre of your book.
  4. Edit the hell out of it until it's pretty much perfect.
  5. Write an enticing blurb that grabs your audience.
  6. Go exclusive to Amazon
  7. Pick relevant but not over popular keywords for your Amazon book search.
  8. Invest in paid and free advertising at least for your launch week but longer if it goes well.
  9. Write a series.
  10. Write more books!
Here are some suggestions of books that go into a little more detail about the points listed above: nbsp; Happy writing! Karen Wrighton

New Year Book News & Competition

Book News & Competition

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed 'merry' New Year Celebrations with friends and family. Hopefully, you have already started planning lots of great things to do next year - holidays, get-togethers with friends, and maybe ticking a few things off your bucket list?

For me this year will see the publication of Ice and Fyre - the last of the Afterland Chronicles. The provisional release date is 7th April 2017. On Monday, I shall be back at work writing away like mad in my little snug by the wood burner in an endeavour to complete the first draft by the end of the month.

I am feeling the pressure to make Ice and Fyre extra special now that Ascension of the Whyte has been such a success - an Amazon Number One Bestseller for the last four weeks! My aim is to make the trilogy one of the few where the third book is as good or even better than the first. Happily, the feedback I have been getting on Ryte of Passage is reassuringly positive with many people commenting that it is better than book one!

If you have read Ascension of the Whyte, Ryte of Passage or The Last Girl Guide and would like the opportunity to win a signed paperback copy of Ice and Fyre when it is published in April, then all you have to do is to post a review of any or all of the three books on Amazon. All reviewers will automatically be entered into the free prize draw and two lucky people will receive a signed copy. If you have already reviewed any of the books then you are already entered! Every review counts as a single entry, so you can enter three times if you have read all three books. Entry is based purely on the review being posted and not on the content of the review so, please be honest.

Later this year will also see the publication of the first of The 'Hoyle and Son' Mystery Thriller series - The Cuckoo Killer. The book is still in the outline stage of production, but I am enjoying doing the research as the series is going to be set in and around Norwich. I am playing around with the idea of having a thriller series with a supernatural edge. I would love to know what you think of the idea.

So that's my year planned - I am going to be busy but I am looking forward to revisiting the Afterlands for one last time...

Noirwich Crime Writing Festival

This week I attended Noirwich Crime Writing Festival and had a fabulous time in spite of the heavy rain.

I particularly enjoyed the Spotlight series - Ian Rankin was awesome, as usual.  He signed books afterwards and provided materials for a display of first and fourth drafts of his latest novel.

I met a lovely bunch of writers at one of the workshops and we have set up The Norfolk and Suffolk Writers' Circle.  If you are an author or aspiring writer, then drop us a line asking join the group and we will see what we can do!

Ascension of the Whyte - Audiobook News!

Hi everyone,

You may well have been wondering where I have been the past couple of weeks. Well, I have been away on holiday to the Cotswolds where I visited many literary places including the birthplace of J. K. Rowling and the famous Rose Farm, and Woolpack Inn made famous by Laurie Lee. I even checked out his grave with a beautiful inscription which pronounces, "He lies in the valley he loved."

I also had a well-deserved rest, ate a great deal, drank a little and sat a lot! However, I have not been entirely idle.  I have done much research and written a few thousand words of The Last Girl Guide, and I have arranged to have an audiobook produced for Ascension of the Whyte, which should be available by Christmas.  So if you are an audiobook fan, check back here for updates on the release date.

A Writers Life - Disasters

Okay, so this week has been a busy week, I planned the complete outlines of the five books that I intended to work on over the next twelve months and even got their cover designs drafted.
Cover Design for my new
Thriller Series - Hoyle & Son
I downloaded a new scrivener app so that I could sync my work onto my iPad for when I had a flash of inspiration and no laptop handy. I was feeling pretty happy with myself, smug even.

Then, just like there really was some Amish-like God up there waving his divine finger at me and tut-tutting at my shameful display of pride - KERPOW! Everything fell apart.

Cover design for the third
in the Afterland Chronicles
Series - Ice & Fyre
Maybe I did worship at the feet of that false God of 'Technology' a little too enthusiastically - recklessly even, but the punishment was harsh. My new syncing app synced all of my work into oblivion, including the first five chapters of Ice and Fyre. I am not ashamed to tell you I cried like a beauty queen only not so prettily.

So, instead of spending the day busily writing as originally planned, I spent the next eight hours trying to recover my work. After googling thousands of 'solutions' to my problem, trawling through hundreds of backup files and performing various geeky technological gymnastics, I got most of it back. Though it appears that the first Chapter of Ice and Fyre sadly, is lost forever.

Trying to remember a couple of thousand words that you wrote a few weeks ago seems an impossible task especially when those words were painstakingly crafted to resolved the cliffhanger left at the end of Ryte of Passage, So now I have to rewrite it....

Looks like this week is going to be another busy week - doubly so because I'm going to backup the hell out of everything!
